Proposed JFK Terminal Extension

This proposed extension of Delta’s Terminal 4 concourse at JFK International Airport in Queens, New York takes inspiration from Eero Saarinen’s nearby TWA Terminal, MIT’s Kresge Auditorium, and the works of Félix Candela. The shape of each of mirrored module lets in diffused, northern light for higher solar radiation absorption in the winter. Their alternating form also allows for naturally day-lit gate lounges.

All eight modules are supported structurally by large concrete columns that integrate most building systems, such as electrical, HVAC, rainwater collection, and fire suppression. The terminal’s roof is lined with over 1400 southern-facing solar panels, which generate enough electricity for all secondary systems. The panels lay atop a closed-loop glycol system, which exchanges heat with an aquifer-tapping cooling system to keep the panels at optimal temperature and operating efficiency.
